Happy Monday: How are you going to play today?

by Katie on April 5, 2010

“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.”-Joseph Chilton Pearce

To begin this week,  I want to thank all of you who have put energy into believing and supporting what we do here.  There are so many amazing things happening here at The Levity Project and that is because of you all who read our blog, do our events, or spread the news.  Thank you for helping to create a shift in how we all see our daily lives.

The Levity Project  is a social movement for all of us and about all of us.   We are all agents of change.   Each of us has the power to be the rock that creates the ripples in the pond.  At The Levity Project, we believe that each of us can choose the ripple we want to make and that  it can be as simple as offering a smile to a stranger.  This change starts small and grows as it spreads to others.

We believe that social change is the sum of all the parts.  And you are and I am all part of this sum.

For those of here on The Levity Project Team, our ripple is about creating more play, laughter, and celebration.

And today’s video is about PLAY.  The act of playing  is vital for our well-being….and don’t let your logical mind tell you it is a waste of time!  Play is what makes the whole machine run….it is the oil for the parts.  Without the energy of play, all productive motion comes to a halt.

The Random House Dictionary has this for one of the many definitions of play.

“a space in which something, as a part of a mechanism, can move.”

We all need the space to be able to move both literally and metaphorically.  Having this sense of movement or “play” is vital to our success and our well being.  Playing can be an act of fun and abandon or it can be centering and soulful.  Regardless, the act playing immerses us in this very moment and that is what allows us to connect to our lives and each other.

Whether playing today means engaging in some fun activity or if it is simply creating more breath in your day so you can keep the movement flowing, we hope you watch and  enjoy the video.   And hopefully, it will start the  wheels turning of  asking yourself…

How am I going to play in my life today?

And by bringing the spirit of play into your day, you create the ripple for someone else.

Enjoy and please tell us WHAT you did today to play!

(The video is from The Levity Project: West Palm Beach in March 2010…and the participants you see are some of the wonderful people who were there in Florida training to be Certified Laughter Coaches.  For more info about becoming a certified laughter coach, click here.)

Hey Katie,
The big “key” here is how play really does immerse us in the moment. When we are truly “playing” (whatever that means for each of us, right) – we DO become fully engaged in that moment. And I think that also shines a deeper inner spirit within us – when we are fully in the moment – and engaged – that DOES create those ripples that spread goodness out into the world. And it’s because – in others seeing our spirits shining – I think we also give others the permission to believe in their own inner light. And as more people shine that light – the light of what really matters to each of us – our world just continues to become more connected to love, to fun, to each other.

Me? I am playing soccer tonight with a bunch of middle school kids. And it WILL most definitely be “play”. Our focus is on fun – and I have this awesome group of kids who completely “get” this idea. It’s a highlight of the week to hang out with these kids!!

Katie,
My daughter and grandchildren came yesterday for a week and we’ve played for the last 24 hrs. They’re at the movies without me right now because I need a break from playing. I’m gearing up for tomorrow horse back riding and a cook out at sunset. Isn’t life grand?

I played with my life’s mission today. I’m going deeper than I’ve ever gone before and discovering new parts of myself. At first I was on a mission, but I realize that I can’t take this task too seriously, I need to have fun with it. I danced. Like tribesmen rain dance. I asked for divinity to come dance with me. As we danced I listened. The process stopped being painful and become spiritual.

Katie, it is an honor to help spread the word about your mission at The Levity Project. It’s something I feel strongly about, and find myself sharing excitedly with others when the conversation shifts to our changing times and how each of us can make a difference.

Please keep on playing! You and everyone who joins you is an inspiration, and you all are, indeed, changing the way our world moves.

My play today was all about jumping rope with my boys. They got their own ropes from Santa this year and it is finally nice enough out there to enjoy the sunshine and teach them the beautiful simplicity of whipping a rope around and around while you jump over it. If you happen to miss. No biggie! Just start it up again.

Katie, I love this post! The act of playing makes me think about the power of my journey unfolding over the past year. Last winter I had an amazing life coach who focused on getting me to play more, so that all areas of my life would improve. She gave me all kinds of assignments involving fun and play and in the process, all of the components in my life I wanted to improve, did just that. My life got better in amazing ways. Not only did consciously “playing” more in every day make my life more fun and abundant, but it led me to becoming a Laughter Yoga Leader, which led me to becoming the Operations Manager for The Levity Project, which led me to take the Certified Laughter Coach training with The Levity Institute, and life just keeps getting better in more and more ways. AND I’m having fun everyday. Play is so vital for creating a life in which you thrive in every arena. Thank you for reminding us of this!
