Part of why I love The Levity Project is not only in bringing amazing people together to do events, but it is the more subtle side of how it affects my life in the days in between all the fun we get to create in public. I love being reminded that The Levity Project started because of an unexpected moment in which I woke up to the idea I create change in how I choose to live each day.
And this week, in the middle of creating The Smile Micro-movement with The Levity Project Team, I experienced such a reminder of "Yahoo! Each one of us DOES makes a difference in the world!!!"
I was driving through the streets of Portland, Maine absorbed in my own thoughts as I prepared for an upcoming meeting. Stopping at a red light, my gaze turned to a man in a parked car next to me. With his window rolled down, the man stared off vacantly. Several teeth were missing and his hair was partly matted down and partly disheveled. He looked as if life had offered him much hardship. Sensing me looking at him, he turned to face me. I turned away in a knee jerk response. I was instantly embarrassed at how I had responded. Was it because I was staring or because it was hard to see someone who was in a such a hard space in their life? What I do know is that I found myself thinking the words often said at The Levity Project, "We are all agents of change." It was that echo which nudged me to do something different that what I might have done before.
I looked back at the man and when our eyes met this time, I smiled a big relaxed smile, noticing for the first time, his clear and strikingly beautiful blue eyes. The deep wrinkles in his face relaxed giving way to a remarkable smile. All I could think was:
This is what the joy of connection looks like.
No sooner had this moment happened, then I noticed a man on the street corner. He looked both hurried and intrigued holding his coffee mug waiting to cross the street. He was looking right at me, maybe because I had this huge grin on my face for what must have seemed to him for no reason.
Seeing my smile, which had initially been directed elsewhere, caused him to smile at me and me at him and there I was, in this beautiful moment which had moments before been a picture of three isolated individuals living our own separate lives but were now three momentary neighbors joyfully connected together by the simple exchange of a smile. It made me marvel again at the power and the effect of a single act.
The light turned green and I drove away still smiling and feeling the levity of the moment. So, I did what any good and curious player with The Levity Project might do…I turned up my favorite music of the day and started smiling broadly at everyone I saw. And what happened in the next moment was unreal to me.
Everyone who saw me smiling smiled back!
Two people on opposite sides of the street smiled at each other when they realized they were both smiling at me. A young child waved, her parents smiled. A man looked up from his newspaper. At another stoplight, a fellow driver winked and smiled. And my favorite one was outside a small corner convenience store where a couple, who were in the middle of an argument, saw me smiling at them and they paused long enough return the grin. It made me wonder if it was harder to argue when they looked back at each other and were suddenly smiling for no reason!
What I was reminded of in that small moment which lasted no more than a few minutes is that smiling really is incredibly powerful. No common language is needed. There are no age barriers or physical ability requirements. There is no discrimination on who can do it. You do not need to worry about doing it well or being the best. All it takes is a willingness to look at someone and do what we all desire but fear the most-connect.
How can you create "the smile effect" in your life this week?
- By making a goal to smile at 50 people a day.
- Choosing to smile at people when you arrive at your office or at your home.
- Intentionally think about things in your life that cause you to smile.
OR…
- You could join The Levity Project in Maine on JULY 16th for our fun upcoming event: Maine's Longest Smile (to participate-you must register here…http://thelevityprojectmaine.eventbrite.com/ )
However, you choose to do it, thank you for being the agent of change you are!
And please share HOW you did it with us to share the inspiration.
Rock on,
Katie

Howdy Lance!
I got goosebumps when I read this article! Isn’t it truly amazing the power contained in the selfless act of a smile? I do this a lot in my daily life, but after reading this today, I am going to double up in my efforts to bring a smile to the face of everyone I have contact with today!
Lance, I am with you in this task of love. Currently, my schedule is very taxing and I may not always jump into every activity you promote, but I will participate! My heart is always with you in these endeavors.
Your writing continues to encourage me in this life, in numerous ways, and I am honsetly grateful. I hope that I can be of influence to as many people, and in such a positive way, that you are. I know you have issues, situations and struggles like the rest of mankind, but you still turn a smiling face to the world. It’s working, it’s having great effect and I know it will come back to you in many blessings.
Keep Rockin’ Bro!
Katie,
What is really so awesome about this – and that you’ve shared it here – is that the smiles you created in your neighborhood – they are spreading virtually! So now…I’ve read this (and smiled AS I read it!) and I know it will make me more conscious of the smile I can give…as I go about my day(s).
Some people are just easier to smile at – a young child at play, someone smiling at the world, a couple holding hands…and that’s pretty great to be able to connect, if even only for a couple of seconds.
It’s those others, though. That person having a bad day (week/year/decade/etc), the person who is bitter, the one who has been hurt somehow – these are the people who can really use that smile. Katie – that’s what you gave!! And how cool – that you impacted another’s life for a few seconds (and who knows if it was something much more)! That’s the real gift…
And you shine at that!!

It’s amazing how infectious happiness can be. When we share our joy with the world, we make ourselves and the people around us happier. It’s why I prefer to be surrounded by passionate people. They have a deep connection with their happiness because they can always access the passion.
That’s why I love the Levity Project. Your deep need to make people smile and feel joy is beautiful.
Hey Katie!
I’m so embarrassed! I clicked over to The Levity Project from Lance’s blog and I began my comment above addressed to Lance! Having left Lance’s blog I guess I had “Lance on the brain”! Please accept my apology.
I am always inspired by all you do and promote and I wanted to let you know the impact your efforts were having, I just goofed. =)
After reading your article this morning, I made an extra effort to offer a smile to every person I came into contact with. What a great day it was! Thank you!
Hi Katie,
Smiling is wonderful…the first thing we want to do is make babies smile when we meet them and it’s so easy to do. With people like you and The Levity Project we can all help others smile. Isn’t life grand. I’ll be sending smiles your way on July 16th!
I so agree about smiling. I am an ER nurse and sadly I am one of the few who always smiles at the patients.
On my blog I do a kindness club with a prompt weekly (on Tuesdays) for an act of kindness. My second week was about smiling :
This is the prompt:

Beautiful writing Katie! It is so inspiring that we can brighten the lives of all those around us, whether we know them or not, with something as simple and miraculous as a smile!
Hi Lance!
I am in Omaha this week and I just spent the evening with a friend from work and was telling her about the smile video. I was also telling her about some of the great work that you are doing with the Levity Project so I thought I would pop out here and see how that smile video is coming along and read your stuff. (Sorry I am not better about doing that!)
This post was excellent and really captures what makes you a wonderful person to know. Thanks for all the work that you do and for bringing smiles to the world. I will do my best to remember to smile at some strangers and see what happens. A great idea!

I love your smile project and I love your videos! I sent Lance a smile clip (of me) earlier this month. I can’t wait to see how you put July’s video together. Your NYC one moved me. I can’t believe those were really big city New Yorker’s. Are you sure they weren’t travelers from foreign countries ready to smile at anyone? So fantastic!
